hi, sorry it's taken me so long. I've tried to post this as new topic but I'm consistently rejected. Rejection builds humility! or humiliation? oh

... now i press the right button it works!!! surprised

'Good day fellow paper soldier lovers,

Thanks for the appreciation of my work on this site. It means a lot to me. Many of you may already know by now my endeavour is neither a hobby nor a business but in fact a real pretend WAR!

At this moment I'm painting like crazy... 12 hours a day, 7 days a week... and I'm very excited because my soldiers are marching into Russia this summer!!. Unlike Napoleon 200 years ago however it's in response to a warm invitation. Any damage and devastation resulting shall be restricted to the sales figures of my sworn enemy - 'movie related mega corporation plastic toys'! GRRRRRRRR.

At the beginning of the year I was approached by an enthusiastic Russian publishing house wondering if I was open to the possibility of them producing my toy soldiers under license for the Russian market (larger print runs and more local production should enable lower prices) - not only that but they wished to commission reinforcements to commemorate the bicentennial of the Great Patriotic War of 1812 and its turning point 'The Battle of Borodino'. When I was drawing up my original plans fro Walkerloo, Borodino was always the next subject of my ambition but alone it would not have been possible to achieve it so timely and so soon.

I've now spent three months making good my preparation for a summer offensive in co-operation with my allies but we've still much work to do. For most of the time this work has been in secret but now I can reveal some of the pictures that shall under pin this new army. (apologies: these scans are already out of date certain corrections having been made) But the first force, comprising of the original waterloo pictures approaches completion and shall be in shops and available for floors soon ( all types: wood, carpet or ceramic tile, in living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens [advisably not during hot food preparation] although tables are also very acceptable , even the garden when it's not raining... or too windy).

Thanks to all of you who have already helped in my endeavour so far. Particularly Vadim, Dmitry and Alexandre to name but a few.

Paper soldiers advance HURRAH!!!

ps.1 Apologies for my post in English... I hope my pictures translate more immediately.

ps.2 Excellent, I see I am not alone in a Borodino based adventure - I look forward to seeing the Paper Generals Borodino vision!

Chris,

Great pictures. Soldiers are looking good. Who do you work on now. I have seen pictures of polish troops and Russian artillery, line infantry and jagers. I really admire you talent and determination ... Even so, I would prefer that soldiers have less cartoonist look and proportions smile Good luck with Borodino smile

Yea, I would say translator does not work well with Russian-English. A lot of things get lost and come out in some ridiculous way wacko Especially the language specials (from Southern Russian spoken language) that our friend is using, which makes me laugh (in the good way) smile

I did the Bavarians a long time ago... they were my first full corps, although not my first paper soldiers... I'm not sure why I did them... just to see if i could?... certainly for my nephew... a compultion... the delightful helmets... the pretty colours... all of that... breast milk. (translator fun).

Since childhood I've had a hatred of painting sculpted model soldiers but loved the pageantry of 18C and 19C military costume, especially on mass, in big formations, hence paper soldiers!

I posted some pictures on a US website here a summary of my compultion. Notice casualties were present from the beginning.

The Bavarians aren't arranged as sheets ready for print... and at the mo I've not time to mount them... but share them with one another if you like them... I ask that you not publish them because they are not ready/may never be ready... biggrin

Chris, pls have my best compliments on your new project!
Great artwork as ever, though the cartoonish looks which are ok for me with the French etc. (enemies) troops,
even while a cartoon-like approach, annoy me a bit if it goes of Russians...

I also do not like dead and deadly woonded Russian or any other troopers as toy soldiers, I think these should be avoided...

Hope my BORODINO 2012 project will show what I mean.

Congratulations!

Hi Sergei et al,

Casualties... hmmm. On a rainy afternoon in London 1998 I drew my first paper soldiers they weren't cut out and made up for a further 7 years. There were casualties among these drawings - including casualties of war with soldiers was instinctive for me. I didn't know paper soldiers had an identifiable history at the time.

Actually this picture was the initiator of my paper soldier production, it's called 'Happy soldiers and sad soldiers, I've never been to war' (not this actual picture but a derivative, I no longer have the original) I'd hated having to draw and then erase much of my drawing because of the juxtaposition of characters in the composition... taking the figures into 2.5D world mean't each could maintain their bodily integrity. I studied architecture at univeristy and card models were always valid representation.

I've thought over the casualty issue a lot. I've thought over the moral permutations of war toys a lot. In one way the casualties are an antidote to the colourful romantic heroic costume of the period, and of war in general. On my packaging I stress that the box contains wounded soldiers and when I present my figures at exhibitions, markets etc If I know they are for younger children I suggest they be removed or introduced with consideration.

Before signing the contract with my publisher I made sure they were not scared by the wounded soldier pictures. I depict my soldiers in action, and there are consequences to that depicted action in the pictures.

My soldiers are sold in the National Army Musuem in London. The Museum is also a military center etc. and the shop manager said many veterans and serving soldiers had seen the small display and found the inclusion of the casualty figures interesting and thought provoking and on the whole laudable.

I contend war toys don't start real wars (excepting real pretend war...). It would be nice if human culture could not make war but that remains a work in progress. I Hope my toy soldiers are small participants in that progress... as play objects like the best war movies I hope they have an anti war sentiment. I've decided to contend and explore the deadly jewel of play violence because of my natural inexplicable attraction to it via military mythology. Leaving violence to the mega toy entertainment franchise corporations is the alternative... I know the desire of individuals is perverse... but the desire of corporations is blind.

I may change my mind but for now I find the inclusion of casualties in my pictures for battle compositions - my toys, essential.

There is a wonderful and dreadful book available of the paintings and sketches made after Waterloo by the surgeon Charles Bell. It must be read alongside the multitude of celebratory uniformology books.

My most recent casualty figure was influenced by a cuirass I'd seen in a waterloo museum, Not sure if it was this one but i found these images which show a similar case cuirass.

the future!

chris

Oh glad you like the Bavarians, my first full corps, made for my nephew... and me. Please feel free to share them with site members!
